Saturday 1st December 2007: The diary is back! Sorry about the lack of entries recently but staff hols and a major problem with our old printer (and even older software) had us on our heads for a week, culminating in having to hand write the round sheets one Sunday! Today was wet and windy which is not good any morning but on a Saturday it's a nightmare. Thankfully it eased a bit at around 5am which was a huge bonus. The weekend papers have been a bit (but only a bit!) thinner for the last two weeks which we hope is an ongoing thing and not just a pre-Christmas lull. Our office decorations were put up today and I'm quite pleased with the fact that I didn't do myself any serious injury getting on and off of step ladders and tables. It's looks good though and just adds that but extra for the festive season.
Sunday 2nd December 2007: Wet, windy and generally horrible this morning although the early arrival of the papers did help.
Our main van would have been even earlier apparently but our driver left some bundles in Bristol and had to go back for them. It's
circumstances like this which makes you value the use of mobile phones. A few years back, the wholesalers would have had to send
out another van or, even worse, waited for the driver to get to his first call where the bad news would be waiting for him. I
had a round to do which I knew about it advance but it wasn't one that I've done on a regular basis so it did take longer than
usual, not helped by my glasses getting waterlogged and the windscreen of the car steaming up all too often.
Tuesday 4th December 2007Still raining quite hard and the papers arrived a little later but nothing to cause us undue problems. Apart from that it was actually a fairly normal morning apart from a few phone calls asking where their Woman/Womans Own/Bella/Best mags are. They were all double issues last week which always complicates matters this far away from Xmas, especially as they'll probably do another double in a week or so.
Wednesday 5th December 2007: What a week so far for weather as a dry morning becomes a rarity. Horrible today with the rain getting harder the longer the morning dragged on. On the plus side, the papers were very early which at least meant our early adults could take a bit more time and caution.
Thursday 6th December 2007: Guess what? Yep, peeing down again this morning but again the papers were very early. One of our lads messed up big time by delivering to a hosue that is away and mixing most of the rest of the round up thereafter. Another (more reliable) lad was ill and I went out an did his, however when delivering to the KFC on the edge of town my mobile rang and as I got it from my pocket, my wet hands turning it into a bar o soap and it ended up bouncing dangerously close to their glass door! It still works though which is a testament to Nokia's. This is unlike the one which I accidently dropped in the washing machine earlier this year and put it through a full cycle.
Friday 7th December 2007: Not much rain today but the wind is something else altogether. Our hanging sign had become partially unhooked and was in danger of falling until one of our customers came to the rescue in a rather unathodox way (thanks Mark!). On the other side of town there was a tree down on the junction of the Spring Road/Welshmill Lane turnoff which meant two of our early adults doing a bit of a detour. That aside, everything else was fine. Maybe tomorrow we cane have dry and calm weather...
Saturday 8th December 2007: Well I half got my wish as regards the weather which was cold but dry and calm early on. The papers were in on time and all was well with the world...until 7am when it started drizzling and then got progressively worse until now at 12pm when it looks as though the entire River Nile has fallen on Frome and is continuing to plummet down even now. The wind has also been picking up and it really is awful out there, On the plus side, although many of our kids must have got drenched, we didn't get a single call regarding delivery of the papers which emphasizes what a superb bunch of boys and girls we have. They really are a credit to the youth of today.
